Position Available — Art Director

Annick Press Ltd. is seeking an art director for its innovative program of quality books for young readers. The art director will facilitate the design process for Annick’s list, contributing suggestions for illustrators and providing creative input, conceptualizing and executing ideas, helping to improve workflow, and designing a number of titles. This is a highly collaborative role that entails working closely with the editorial and production staff.

Responsibilities include

● art directing book jackets, covers, and interiors for hardcovers, paperbacks, and ebooks for formats including picture books, middle grade and young adult books, illustrated non-
fiction, and other illustrated titles
● designing and/or overseeing the design of top-quality, commercial designs for approximately twenty-five titles per year, ranging from board books to YA novels and
ensuring that design workflow meets key deadlines
● working with the publishers and editorial director to shape Annick's list from a visual perspective
● identifying, selecting, and liaising with illustrators, artists, and photographers, and working with the marketing and editorial departments to determine the best fit for each project. This includes reviewing artist portfolios across a range of styles, commissioning original art, and overseeing the creation of art for interiors and covers
● assisting in organizing and facilitating cover and interior content meetings, and discussing and articulating visual and marketplace perspectives within these meetings
● working with the managing editor to initiate, improve, and implement new processes to facilitate communication and workflow with the creative team (i.e., design → editorial → production) and with illustrators and freelancers to provide the highest standard of creator care
● overseeing the work of freelance designers and ensuring consistency in the preparation of files for print, as well as compliance with the Annick style and design guide; providing
feedback on designs originated out of house at key stages
● managing day-to-day work of another in-house designer, assigning projects and providing guidance and feedback on their design work as necessary
● reviewing color correction, proofs, and finishes, and working on best practices for and quality assurance of ebooks, in cooperation with the production department.
● working closely with the production department to manage schedules and create technically superior files
● designing marketing and promotional materials as required

Qualifications

The ideal candidate has
● a minimum of four years of previous design experience in children’s book publishing or equivalent experience
● knowledge of the children’s book market in Canada and the US, a passion for children’s books, and the ability to demonstrate innovative thinking across a wide variety of projects
● a strong awareness of new art trends, artists, and illustrators
● demonstrated typesetting and design skills; an excellent understanding of design programs; and proficiency in InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, and other desktop
publishing packages
● knowledge of production as it relates to design, including knowledge of in-house proofing, color printing, and ebook formats in the children’s marketplace
● a commitment to building lasting relationships with illustrators and freelancer designers
● excellent organizational skills, with an ability to prioritize under tight deadlines
● excellent communication, project management, and creative problem-solving skills
● a willingness to be flexible and collaborative in developing new roles and workflow
