Deirdre Betteridge

Deirdre Betteridge was born in Toronto and knew from the age of twelve that her desire to paint surpassed all other interests. After a brief attempt at piano lessons, it became evident to the rest of her family that art, rather than music, was her true love. She spent her teen years in Montreal, attending oil and watercolor classes in the evenings, and enjoying printmaking, sculpting and life drawing at a CEGEP throughout the day. These times were most cherished, as they presented Deirdre with exposure to so many artistic experiences, and reaffirmed her passion for art and illustrating.

A return to Toronto presented the opportunity to attend the Ontario College of Art, where she graduated with a diploma in communications and design in 1983.

Deirdre has been an art director for a magazine publisher, illustrated many magazine articles and designed a line of greeting cards for Carlton Cards. She has also redesigned corporate images and logos for several organizations, especially enjoying those assignments that related to children. These include Grandview Children’s Rehabilitation Centre, in Oshawa, Ontario, and Operation Herbie, affiliated with the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto.

Illustrating children’s books has proven to be a true joy for Deirdre because she can use humor in her work along with rich colors and flowing illustrations.

Deirdre is married and lives in Whitby, Ontario, illustrating most of the time, gardening some of the time, and loving and raising her two children, Adam and Emily, all the time!
