Annick Press has long been an innovator in quality children’s literature. The company was founded in 1975 by Anne Millyard and Rick Wilks with a commitment to books that address the world of the child by offering a reading experience that is both stimulating and exciting.
Three years after it began, Annick received a package from an unknown writer by the name of Robert Munsch. Today he is one of the most popular writers in North America. One of his earliest books, The Paper Bag Princess, became the kids’ book of the eighties, not just in North America, but throughout the world. It has sold millions of copies and is a bestseller in seven languages. In 2005 we released the 25th Anniversary special edition of this much-loved book.

From our first publishing program of two books per year, Annick has expanded to approximately thirty titles annually. In 1999 a second editorial office was opened in Vancouver by Colleen MacMillan. With the epithet of “Excellence and Innovation in Children’s Literature,” we have expanded into young adult and middle reader fiction, while continuing to develop fresh and original non-fiction and picture books that capture experiences familiar to young readers. We are known for a dynamic, energetic publishing program that explores both the contemporary and historic world, while entertaining young readers.

We are extremely active in the area of rights selling. There is an Annick booth at all the major rights fairs, as well as sub-agents in key foreign territories. To date, the company has licensed editions in over twenty countries throughout the world.

Annick books are valued companions as kids grow into an awareness of themselves and the larger world around them. When a book resonates with youth, it succeeds in opening doors to the imagination; it can reveal truths and new ways of looking at one’s life or the larger community. We now have a generation raised on television, video games and the Internet, yet we continue to believe that nothing rivals the pleasure and joys of a great read.

We are committed to books that help encourage dialogue, offer support and encouragement, develop critical thinking skills and, hopefully, address the barrage of pressures that confront today's kids. Annick strives to portray children who respect themselves and others, and are able to accept differences without fear.

It takes great energy and faith to help children evolve into confident, capable adults. The books published by Annick mirror the reality experienced by young readers of all ages and offer reassurance and support, while also feeding their need to be informed and entertained.

Our list of groundbreaking titles is extensive, as are the awards they have received. In the realm of picture books we are known as the publisher of outstanding classics beyond The Paper Bag Princess, such as Red Is Best and The Mole Sisters. Cutting-edge books for teens and young adults include such recent successes as Chanda’s Secrets, a book about the HIV/AIDS pandemic in Africa, which received the prestigious “Printz Honor Award” from the American Library Association, and The Longlight Legacy, the highly acclaimed fantasy trilogy by Dennis Foon. Mimus, a gripping historical novel, was named in the Best Books of the Year category by School Library Journal.

Our non-fiction award winners, with such diverse and intriguing topics as advertising and medieval job descriptions, include Made You Look: How Advertising Works and Why You Should Know, In Your Face: The Culture of Beauty and You, The Blue Jean Book: The Story Behind the Seams, as well as Archers, Alchemists and 98 Other Medieval Jobs You Might Have Loved or Loathed.

Over thirty years of publishing quality children’s literature has reinforced our belief that books constitute a unique experience. It has been said that book readers are made, not born, which is why we strive to publish the very best there is, to offer titles that ring with emotional content and authenticity so that readers will always be able to connect with the world around them. We hope that Annick titles will help form the basis of a life-long love affair with the printed word.

 Enjoy!
